Previous Condition: This painting showed evidence of an earlier conservation treatment where the varnish was removed and the canvas was lined. In this process the original tacking margins of the canvas were removed. Following this a thick layer of surface dirt accumulated and the original image could no longer be clearly seen.

Conservation treatment: The surface dirt and discoloured varnish were removed using a selected solvent. Some of the earlier retouchings were also removed. An isolating brush varnish was applied, small damages exposed in the varnish removal were retouched with reversible colours. A final varnish was then applied. The small damages to the frames were filled and coloured. The painting was then secured in the frame by the use of brass plates on the rear of the picture.
